This is an evaluation that I have a feeling will come back to bite me, but I trust in my evaluation process, which was given to me by a respected long-time NFL, now XFL, general manager and scout. Nonetheless, no evaluation system is foolproof, but the objective is to be correct more often than not. In the case of Joey Hobert, my evaluation process, which is rooted in measurables, game film, and production in marquee games, doesn't rate him favorably, although there is other evidence suggesting that I may be wrong.
Joey is small, with okay speed, and was somewhat disappointing in the game I watched against BYU. I don't want to be overly critical, as Joey was named an FCS All-American. However, despite his impressive stats against BYU, I was disappointed with his drop balls in traffic, lack of separation on deep passes, instances where BYU defenders seemed to manhandle him, and his low catch rate when the game was on the line. Based on my evaluation, I would rate Joey as a 3.9-star player with his contribution at Texas State questionable, particularly with Ashtyn Hawkins and Kole Wilson ahead of him.
However, it's worth noting that his father played in the NFL, he was named an FCS All-American by his coaches and Bluebloods, and he did have 15 receptions and a touchdown at Washington State during his freshman year. Lastly, while I was a huge fan of Wes Welker in college, I did not think highly of Danny Amendola during his first few years at Tech. Interestingly, Joey reminds me of Amendola, so let's hope that like Danny, Joey comes into his own as an upperclassman.
