Chayse Todd

RS Junior
Not my highest rated recruit, though I rate him high, Chayse Todd is without a doubt one of my top 5 favorite recruits. One of the joys of going through this process of evaluating each recruit is that I get to learn more about them and their journey. There's no story that I've connected with more than Chayse Todd's. His struggle to balance his rage and aggression with poise, maturity and discipline is one that the very best football players learn to do. In fact, a good balance will reap benefits well beyond his playing days, but I digress.
Though Chayse is a transfer, and I overweight a player's college stats over high school, his high school Hudl was too impressive for me to overlook. His Hudl shows a mobile, athletic big man with a whole lot of nastiness. Though his mechanics needed work, as he stands too high and loses balance, the physical traits are there to be coached up in college. So why didn't it happen at Houston to the level one might expect?
I'm speculating that Chayse's extreme confidence in himself may have prevented an honest assesment of the areas where he needed to improve, such as his base, strength, technique and the cerebral requirements of playing offensive line. The good news is Chayse is a smart young man and all of those areas can be improved with discipline and hardwork. The nastiness, toughness and natural physical ability that he brings are traits that can't be taught. Hence, I believe the sky is the limit for Chayse if he puts his trust in coach Shoemaker and lives in the gym with coach Huth. Btw, being Nash Jones' shadow wouldn't hurt either.
