Tellek Lockette
6'3" 330lbs RG
Junior
Transfer from ULM
Tellek is a 6'4", 330-pound right guard (RG) who started every game for ULM. Despite their record, the team boasted a decent offensive line. They faced opponents like Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and Texas State, the latter leading the nation in TFLs, and gave up only 5 sacks (1.6/game). The primary issues were the offensive scheme and a lack of explosiveness and vision in the backfield. The team's quarterback completed just 52% of his passes for 1,246 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions.
The College Football Network awarded the entire right side of the offensive line and the center with 2nd Team All-SBC. Having watched ULM's games against Appalachian State and Texas A&M, I concur with CFN's assessment, a rare alignment with the media for those familiar with my writing.
Tellek's pedigree adds to his appeal. His father, currently the running backs coach at Marshall, was a two-time All-American at Idaho State and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. Tellek's high school alma mater, St. Thomas Aquinas, boasts the highest number of NFL draft picks over the past decade.
Despite his imposing size and athleticism, what struck me most about Tellek was his football IQ and positional instincts. While undoubtedly benefiting from excellent coaching, he has a lot of natural ability. There are areas for improvement that hinder his full potential, IMO. Nevertheless, I can see him as an NFL prospect by his senior year if he puts in the work.
In the Texas A&M game, Tellek never appeared outmatched. Despite the lopsided score, he imposed his will numerous times. The right side of the line performed well. Here's a clip from the Texas A&M game that showcases Tellek and the right tackle effortlessly handling a defensive stunt.
In the clip below, a game against Appalachian State, observe how Tellek instinctively peels off to the second level. However, within the same clip, you'll also notice one of my critiques—effort. I observed several instances where he failed to finish blocks
Possibly due to conditioning or the ridiculous high-tempo offense ULM tried to implement, but I often saw Tellek operating at ~80% or less, perhaps to conserve energy. This is a bad habit that could bleed to other aspects like practice, the weight room, film study, etc... A full commitment from Tellek is crucial for making the necessary improvements that could enhance his chances of being drafted. In fact, he'll need that type of effort to start at TXST, because we're deep with talent.
