Commentary:
RJ had insane stats coming out of Westwood High School in Austin, but as you should know, we don't take high school stats into account if sufficient college stats are available. Luckily, RJ played plenty for FCS Northern Arizona during his freshman and sophomore years. He exploded onto the scene his freshman year with a win over Arizona that ultimately led to him being named the Big Sky Freshman Player of the Year. In my opinion, his sophomore year wasn't as impressive, though he did have a nice game against national champion runner-up Montana State, throwing for 3 touchdowns and catching another. However, I place the blame more on his below-average, to be nice, offensive line. When RJ had time, he looked good.
He's not a big guy, but he does have good arm strength. He has a decent ability to read defenses from the pocket and above-average mobility. He reminds me of Brady McBride in stature and mobility but with more willingness to stay in the pocket. His decision to transfer to a Power 5 program and skip the Group of 5 route is befuddling, so I question his decision-making, except that he recognized the opportunity at Texas State. Jordan McCloud, who will be the Day 1 starter, does have a history of injury, so RJ's only competition will be two raw freshmen who need to improve their throwing mechanics to contend. Though PJ Hatter, because of his electrifying running ability, will receive touches regardless of who starts or gets injured.
Overall, I give RJ a 4.10 for his measurables, a 4.4 for my subjective game film review, and a 4.32 for other factors, for a total of 4.27 overall rating.
Our offensive line would give RJ the time he needs to be successful, and his passing skills are more advanced than the two freshmen currently on the team.
